definitely a neat car- the wheels match the rest of it perfectly.

Are you saying a VW 1.8T is a direct fit to the boxster transaxle?

aclark133 07-16-2013 09:51 AM

Also the 225 TT has 2 side mount air/air intercoolers

the boxster 5-and 6-speed transaxles are interchangeable, and the boxster 5-speed transaxle is a repurposed audi 012 unit so I assume complete compatibility (you would have to turn the engine 90 degrees).

regarding intercoolers, I think standard practice on boxsters is to use an air/water unit and repurpose the centre radiator as a heat exchanger for the intercooling. kpaz found on his 400 + hp 4-pot subi conversion that he had more cooling than required, so I assume that the middle rad wouldn't be missed on the 1.8t conversion.

Just put over 100 miles on my 1.8t 1999 Boxster. I'm using the stock transmission, the gearing works out great with this turbo engine. I have a tuned APR tuned ECM, so the power should be about 200HP. I did have to put a little bump in the top engine cover to clear the engine but the roof still opens and closes without problems. I still need to find a solution for making the 6cyl tach work with the 4cyl engine.

where's the PICS!

I also put an identical 1.8t and 5 speed transmission, also tuned to about 200hp. It's a blast to drive.

What are you guys typically getting for fuel mileage with your stock engines? While I haven't actually checked it yet, I seem to be getting great fuel mileage with this 1.8t entgine, I'm guessing around 30mpg or better. I'll check it over my next full tank of fuel.

This is very impressive! I'm usually in the upper 20s in my 2.5. Strangely, highway vs city doesn't seem to make a huge difference for me, nor does driving at high RPMs for longer periods of time.

My 1.8T Golf gets 35-40 hwy and 30ish city.

Reviving an old thread here.

Has anyone else done an engine swap with a VW 1.8t engine? I want to do a project car with an alternative engine that can be pushed to around 300hp. The 1.8t seems like a good fit due to cost, comparability with the 5 speed tranny and performance upgrades. I know one guy in NY did this about a year ago. Any additional info would be appreciated.

Thanks
