CEL Catalitic Converter

Driving along and got a CEL. Took it to my local garage and he said the code was a bad right bank catalitic Converter. Was told that I had to use porsche parts and the repair for the right converter would be $1900. Was he correct and is this price in the ball park. I decided to have him reset the code and look into it before pulling the trigger on the repairs. Second item: the headliner has become lose from the front. He said it was broken clips. Can these be purchased and is it a reasonable fix?

A new cat from Porsche is $1,200+. Used from a dismantler $400-$500. Used from eBay ~$200. Your choice.

Not knowing what year and model of car you have, I've provided a sample of what I found on eBay in 5 minutes. This should take you abou 2 hours including raising the car. Jack it the night before and spay all bolts/nuts with penetrant. Get a new exhaust gasket from your dealer. This is DIY that can be accomplished for less than $300...

Put an ad on this Forum. Someone who has upgraded will be happy to re-cooperate some of their cost. You pick it up cheaper than ebay.

I sold mine here and was happy to get rid of it. The other guy was happy to pass inspection. WIn- Win

Just for information's sake..... is it legal to have a repair shop install used cats in CA? Here in NC, it is illegal to sell used converters to anyone except scrap/metal recyclers. It is VERY illegal to install used converters at a licensed state inspection station (most any repair shop).

Probably not, but then CA has so many stupid, redicu... sorry, I'm getting off topic.

The easy way around that is to avoid having a shop do it in the first place...

The truth is, it's not difficult to get a good idea of the condition of the cats with a visual check (borescope may be required).

I replaced one of my cats at 50K with a used one that had 65K on it. It's been great and I got the set for $200.
