Good find! The past few cars of mine (including my 986) came from a private party off of Craigslist. Just looking at the shear volume of cars (and other goodies) that pass through Craigslist, there are bound to be some bargains out there. Hell, I better go look right now.

Very cool. I lurk on a lot of car forums. The Rennlist 996 forum - 996 Forum - Rennlist Discussion Forums - is a great place with some great car enthusiast and tons of great 996 info.

Great color combo. Truly one of the prettiest 996s I've seen. I think the simple shape without tacked on body parts and jutting bumpers is the best looking. I'm also very partial to Blue

I have seen quiet a few. You have to buy from the owners and use the forums. There are always motivated sellers anxious to get into their next toys who dont want to get hosed on trade in. Theyd rather sell to another enthusiast. Theres a forum member Groovezilla on Rennlist who has it as his hobby to buy 996's for 10k. As soon as he is driving one hes already searching for the next. He has some good tips on what sort of sellers and locations to hone in on. Seems like people in th major cities think their 996 was not mass produced and that the average buyer isnt leary of a German sportscar nearly a decade out of warranty requiring expensive parts and specialized labor--these guys still think its still worth $20k. The guys outside of the major markets are a bit more realistic.
Few weeks back I saw an 2003 Cab black\tan with about ~80k listed for $12k on Autotrader. Prices are all over the place but outstanding work is really the make or break question. A $10k 996 still on original clutch/ims, shocks and no addressing of known weak spots like AOS, waterpump is not a steal.

Exactly! This describes the seller that I bought from. In the Craigslist ad he mentioned that he wanted the car to go to a good home and he didn't want to even talk to anyone who was going to flip the car. He got serious about working with me when I sent him a pic of the wrecked Boxster.

Yep. That Sort Of Work Done At 90K Miles Definitely Sounds Like An Enthusiast. A Casual Owner Would Just Dump It. Casual Owners Are Also Less Likely To Be Changing ThE Oil More Than Once A Year Or Using AN Oil With More Protection Than Just Mobil 1.Short Shifting The Car Too Often And Letting The Car Too Long Without N Alignment (Screws Up Expensive 986 Tires). Lots Of Costly Repairs Can Be Avoided By Buying From An Enthusiast.

thstone,
How did conversations with your insurance adjuster and agents go? Was there any negotiations? Looks like you did OK, especially getting to keep the Boxster.

Good job THS. That is the kind of sweet deal I'm watching for. I would have driven down to L A in a hart beat for it. That blue with tan is a beauty.

Great Catch thstone!!!! All the numbers look good, but $10k??? Wow!!!! Glad to see the Good Karma come your way.
Also I'll second blue, it looks good and clean w/o wings or ground effects. I would be curious to hear what you think of it after a few weeks of driving.

My insurance was fairly reasonable and my expectations were pretty low so they didn't have to do much to exceed them. They moved very fast so definitely credit is due there.
Of course, insurance companies aren't handing out $$$ without just cause but they weren't trying to completely screw me over either. Overall, I was reasonably satisfied.
