Getting work done.
I have a 2002 with about 50k miles and i just dropped it off for an LN imsb, aos, starter, clutch, 60k service, tranny fluid, brake flush, and SS brake lines, rss pulley. I have had the car since new and was wondering if you guys though I should also have them replace the chain tensioners? Is this a component that fails frequently?

Are you getting clatter on start up? If so, then you can try changing the tensioners. Might fix it, maybe not. If you don't have any noise on startup, then I wouldn't do it.

I don't recognize any strange noises upon start up other than my starter. The car sounds like a sewing machine when its idling. I guess Ill ask the shop. I remember reading about the tensioners somewhere, but don't know from where. My 02 would have the newer ones. What I read may have been regarding pre-2000 cars that have the older style tensioners.
Thanks

How's your cooling system? water pump? cleaning debris from radiators, etc. Also CV boots? I've seen those items needing attention at this age/mileage in PPIs. In my reading and research on these cars I haven't come across issues with the tensioners. I did a similar scope to yours recently on my 04 with 58k mi. I also had a leaking coolant tank and replaced that. 60k service is pretty extensive. You'll be good for a while after that. Let us know how your IMSB looks. I had my mech return it to me. It was intact but loose.

Its normal for the engine to have a bit of a whine like a sewing machine.
Don't worry about the chain tensioners unless you are having a particular problem that points to them.

My mechanic said they needed to send it to LN along with a form for warranty purposes. I asked for a picture.

Tony Callas mentioned periodic replacement of the tensioner to the IMS with a serious warning not to neglect this item. I mentioned this to my Indy and he said they replace those with IMSB retrofit or at least inspect them as SOP. You were probably thinking about the thread discussing best maintenance practices for m97 engines which he raised in the recent Excellence Magazine article but Tony's advice on the tensioners applied to all IMS engines or at least the m96.
Well thats my recollection.

So I have had an oil leak for the last 6 years. My mechanic has the car up and the transmission out and I happened to call to ask him to look at the tensioners as well. He said that the leak is coming from the IMSB, but could have just been a faulty flange. In anycase I am glad that I am getting this work done as the likelihood of IMSB failure is greater when that area also leaks. He said that my RMS was completely dry.

I got to see my imsb today and it was pretty tight. It had some wobble but it was minimal. The bearing still had the rubber seal and was stamped NSK made in England. He said two tensioners showed wear so they were replaced. My car had 50k miles, is almost always revved high and is warmed up to operating temp before driving off. I have been annually changing my oil and using castrol syntec 5w40. My imsb tube was full of oil. I replaced the clutch as well as it was fairly worn.
