Does anyone think the same way about selling their Box?

When I'm driving my Boxster, I think about how fun it is, how much I love it, how I will never sell it, and how it has so much performance for a low bargain price.

When I park it and stop driving it for at least 3 hours, I think about selling it for a newer fuel efficient practical car.

I'm just wondering if i'm the only one having these thoughts.

This has nothing to do with affording it. It has been an extremely affordable and reliable car for me so far. But sometimes I wish I have back seats and I wish I can drive faster in rain and snow, which I can't really do without hydroplaning or sliding in the Boxster. And I wish I had cup holders for coffee on those 4 hour road trips I take each month.

stephen wilson 02-06-2013 11:08 AM

Um....... No.

1)I don't commute far enough to worry about the fuel economy. In fact, I'm dreaming about the 500 H.P. stroker small block I want to put in my '65 Mustang project.

2) With the right tires, you can drive plenty fast in the rain (but should you? )

3) You should't be driving fast in the snow with any vehicle.

4) If you must, you can add a decent cup holder, like the "ultimate cupholder" that sits on the floor.

jb92563 02-06-2013 11:14 AM

I second that NO!

If affordability is NOT the issue then the solution is simple.

You need a second car.

I bought my Boxster as a second car as backup for my 99 Wrangler and within 2 weeks the Box became my primary car because of the fun factor.

Now I only Jeep it when hauling stuff, the weather is bad or going to the Market parking lot.

Theres plenty of cheap used Econo cars out there and if you insure for liability only it will be pretty cheap on the insurance for the second car.

thstone 02-06-2013 11:48 AM

I third that .... NO!

My Boxster is my daily driver AND a great track car. I could not ask for more.

Everyday I am living the dream!

1olddude 02-06-2013 12:18 PM

I have a Jeep for the snow and mud, a truck to haul crap, a Honda Odyssey for the sports team car pool, and the Boxster is my go to, good weather, top down, road trip, canyon cruising, fun car. I won't sell it until I can afford the 981.

Bmod986 02-06-2013 12:31 PM

Well I also say no. I love my box and like I have said in other post till death do us part.

I recently put on new tires, the mich pilote sport A/S which are amazing. I go pretty fast in the rain with these and I took the box snow drifting with them as well. Simply amazing.

Back seats well don't care for them. Would be nice but its not a necessity.

The cup holder my friend bought it for me. Its one of the bell cup holders. Not great but its so much better then holding the drink or asking my friend to hold it for me.
http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01/21360186069.jpg

Like the others said maybe all you need is a second car. I use my parants SUVs when I need to do something the box can't " carry more then one person, more stuff, and drive in snow higher then 2in."

rondocap 02-06-2013 01:15 PM

I have a BMW 335i and a Toyota Prius Plugin as my daily - but after I got the Boxster I am driving that more as it's so much fun.

Sure, especially having 3 cars - sometimes I do consider selling it, but I'd want something along the same lines. The Prius I have to keep because I do a lot of work driving and it's very efficient.

In the future I may get rid of the 335i (Excellent highway car with loads of torque and tech) and the 986 Boxster for something more saucy - like a Cayman S or a newer 981 Boxster.

particlewave 02-06-2013 01:58 PM

Yep, I'm with ya M96 ;)
My reasons are a little different, though...
Tired of always going out of my way to park, just to find a door ding anyway...tired of constant harassment by rednecks in their hick-mobiles...tired of every 17yr old in a ricer wanting to race...

But, like you, on the good driving days, that is all forgotten. Still considering trading it in this spring, but I'm torn.

navyc130fe 02-06-2013 02:31 PM

Hell NO! However, this is not my everyday driver, if it was, you may have a point... I've only thought about upgrading to something Italian and red. Well, I guess it's not an upgrade, just different. I also love the fact that people think it's a $100K car, cracks me up.

AKnowles 02-06-2013 07:02 PM

Nope. I consider 22~24 mpg in city and about 26~30 highway is just fine. My 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid only got about 26 mpg in city and about the same highway. Sometimes I could get a few more mpg from it in city, but the max was 30 and only then with no AC. My wife drives it now and my boxster is my DD. FWIW, she prefers the Escape to her Prius. It did get better mpg, but was not built right by the factory. Always wore one tire to the nub about three times as fast as it should have.

Grim1ock77 02-06-2013 07:17 PM

I can't imagine selling my Boxster, although I just purchased it a couple of months ago - just in time to keep it garaged for most of the winter.

I too have it as my 3rd car to a rather nice but boring Accord and the family Odyssey (need something for the 3 kids). I am looking forward to some nice weather and the opportunity to drop the top and cruise around.

I also must admit, I have had the opportunity to take it to work and also enjoy everyone marveling at how I can afford such an "expensive" sports car.

Vista glass 02-06-2013 09:37 PM

I'll join the choir. NO. I got a Boxster to fill that niche of fun to drive. I have practicle vehicles. They are efficient but boring. I will keep a Boxster or something like it as long as I can. I find it reliable ,affordable, easy enough to work on , but most of all fun to drive. Life is short, have some fun.

Crono0001 02-06-2013 09:42 PM

No.

See above.

Perfectlap 02-06-2013 09:59 PM

whatever I could get for it would not put me in something better. I'd have to sink more money into the money pit that is car ownership. and the improvement would probably marginal.

Skrapmot 02-06-2013 11:59 PM

Buy a bad weather backup car.
Mines a 2007 Prius to impress the neighbors with my hipness, to drive on the rainy days to keep my black car clean, for trips into San Francisco which frequent digs and dents are commonplace, or when I know I'll be bumper to bumper traffic .

Heiko 02-07-2013 03:37 AM

Well I have to confess - I think about it every now and then (selling it that is) but I know that if i sold it I would buy another one shorly after (maybe newer) and I can hear my wife already "you're not buying another car" LMAO - So I just keep mine and drive it. Look after it and it will treat you well, we'd be hard pressed to find a better handling car :)

Deserion 02-07-2013 03:49 AM

Sometimes when I'm in the garage, I'll start to ponder about selling my Boxster. Perhaps get something more practical, something with better fuel efficiency.

Then those thoughts go straight out the window when I go for a drive.

mikefocke 02-07-2013 04:53 AM

It's all about the tires. I never had any trouble in rain and have chosen the Boxster over a 4WD CRV and the CRV had fresh Michelin Rainedge tires, this was for a trip where I had to get there and is was post hurricane rain.

OTOH, there comes a time and I did sell the Boxster and buy a Prius...simply too old and wasn't using the Boxster enough and knew that wasn't good for it. Had I been younger and still using a car frequently, I certainly would have kept it. You shoulda seen the laughs when I pulled up at the recycling station in a Porsche and opened both trunks. The Prius is far more skittish in the rain than the Boxster ever was.

Coffinhunter 02-07-2013 07:33 AM

Never crosses my mind. Sancha is my DD and I am just fine with the mileage. If I ever need to carry more than what she can hold, I will use the wife's car.

Of course here in Florida, it is convertible season year round:D

BruceH 02-07-2013 07:47 AM

Nooooooooooo:eek: Get the Ultimate Cup holders and some better tires. I have a 4 door Tundra for the occasional time that I need that but mostly it just sits. The difference in the drive experience is just not comparable. Life is too short to drive a "practical" car on a regular basis!

Bmod986 02-07-2013 08:59 AM

Not to change the subject of the thread but I am surprised to see so many boxster owners who have a prius as well. WHY a prius there is a huge market of better looking cars that perform better then the prius and are around the same price. Just asking and I mean no insult to the prius owners its your choice and I respect it but I am also curious to the thought process.

All I can add to this is my Box S+ gets better MPG than any other vehicle I have ever owned. Admittedly being able to utilize the drop top any day here in SoCA is a big bonus!

ProjectM96 02-07-2013 11:59 AM

I guess i'm asking for too much wanting everything in a practical package for a good price.

Mazdaspeed 3 gets similar gas mileage, similar 0-60mph, similar top speed. It is also known for its great handling for a FWD. It is a hatchback with back seats. It's the best mix of both worlds. Being a Mazda owner of 8 years means I have an attachment to the sporty little brand.

But for $25,000 for a new one, and $16,000 for a used one, I cannot afford it. I can only afford the monthly payments for a $10,000 car for now.

mcomet 02-07-2013 09:12 PM

I say yes tho I have a different daily driver so it isn't about that. For me, if I don't drive for a while I start thinking about something better, newer, faster. Like a 997 or Cayman or beyond. Starting looking at stuff online etc... Then I drive my car and get the smiles, I care less about trading up so soon and a happy until I don't drive it for a while and start wondering again lol...

For me it was 4 things.
1. The wife likes it. If your married you'll get it, especially if she's a strong willed professional type. The wife needs to be on board most of the time for auto purchases and for some reason, chicks dig the Prius. This is necessary if I'm to be allowed to take up garage space with project cars.
2. Resale value is nuts. They sell like banana in a monkey cage in the Bay Area, the only thing I can compare it is my old Jeep Wrangler which I sold two used for 80 cents on the dollar.
3. They have a certain of panache that other "cheap" hybrid cars don't. Both the wife and I are decently paid professionals and most of our colleagues drive Acuras, BMW's , Mercedes, blah blah blah. The Prius (probably since so many celebs drive them) are also commonplace in our executive parking lots, and don't scream, I'm a poor college student or Walmart employee. In fact (gasp) my neighbor just traded in his AMG Mercedes for a new plugin prius much to my shock.
4. It gets 43.8 mpg , even with my heavy foot.

This being said, we also have a new Siena Minivan, and the old Porsche 986, and they all get driven somewhat. I couldn't survive with just the Porsche, especially with 2 kids, a big house with lots of projects, a wife who shops a lot, etc...

rp17 02-08-2013 11:19 AM

To the OP...You need a beater my friend. A few years back I had a Maxima that was a 2nd car I had bought for my nephew. The car had like a long Matrix size gash one the passenger door. Well one day I pulled into a parking lot and this guy had is SUV parked way over the line. I parked my car dead on between the lines of my spot where the Suv driver couldn't get in his car. It was great. I would of never done that in the Boxster so I decided to teach the guy a lesson. What could he do, key my car? Who cared it was bought to teach my nephew how to drive a stick. I would park that car anywhere. No stress!! 2nd car will get you cheaper insurance also or about the same.

RandallNeighbour 02-08-2013 11:31 AM

For me it's a YES. I'd much rather have a 991S, I just can't afford it (yet). I want a back seat and a much larger motor and a car that doesn't have poorly made parts on it. The newer Porsches are far more dependable and have better crafted parts than the 97 models of the 986 and 996.

Chuck W. 02-08-2013 03:34 PM

If I did, I would take a $50,000 loss on the car. I am much to proud (& cheap) to do that! This happens when you buy new.

Not always the case. Women and wifes come in more than one flavor. Just sayin'.

I've got so much invested in the Dangermobile, it's death do us part.

ISUnorth 02-09-2013 07:15 AM

Think about it just a little sometimes. Bought the '02 in spring of '08. Still only has 37k on it since I am in Minnesota and park it for half the year. I sometimes think maybe a used 911 Carrera 4 with AWD might be cool for the weather here but I already have an A4 quattro daily driver that I just love. Added an '87 924S two years ago (another low miles mobile with only 39K) so it competes for drive time. I did do the troublesome seals replacement this summer so have $$ invested in the Boxster and it is an awesome drive. Got to get new tires because the ones on it are cupped and the noise is drving me crazy.

Guess I'll stay a three car guy for the near future. Maybe I just need a bigger garage? One last thing, I am thinking of doing the local Porsche club drivers ed training. Would like to get the Boxster out on a track just once before I am so old that the sight of me there would scare the younger kids!

The Prius is genius engineering. The concept of using wasted kinetic energy and converting it to usable electric power is mind-boggling. The first gen Prius was not efficient enough for Toyota, they sold that technology Honda and Ford, and they still use it. The second gen is amazing for commuting. Back in the days when I was driving the kids 60+ miles to school each day, it was necessary.

The Porsche dealer took it in trade without hesitation, and it was sold to another dealer before the end of the day.

But I'm not going back, I enjoy the Box too much. No takesy-backsey is what I told the dealer. :D

What happens with all of the batteries that will eventually have come out of those Prius-es ? They can't be reused or recycled . Buried in the earth for the next 100 millenniums ?

No way... I will keep it to the end... I never had a car that handel the rood like she does! I wood be in heaven if I could drive it daily but I need a truck for my daily work and here in quebec I also can't drive it in the winter. I do love it very much and don't tink of selling it.

Lithium batteries are between 70-100% recyclable. The problem is lithium is so cheap, there's little financhial incentive to do it.
Unfortunately , due to EU's over zealous carbon emissions laws, and the US MPG laws coming into effect, even companies like Porsche will have to looks at "hybrid" tech to meet these crazy quotas.

copsahl 02-10-2013 06:52 PM

The Prius uses NiMH, not lithium ion batteries. Toyota has a program to encourage extraction/reuse of the nickel in the batteries, but yes, lots and lots will end up buried.

Skrapmot 02-10-2013 08:35 PM

That's true, the older Prius use Nimhs, but the 2012 Plugin Prius, Volt , Tesla, and Leaf uses Li-ion batteries, and the next gen Honda's will also.
Soon most cars will be li-ion batteries due to their power to weight and lack of charge memory.
We'll probably actually have to start paying a recycle fee on them since its not very profitable.

Done, and done.

Porsche 918 hybrid.

In pure electric mode, the 918 will hit 93 mph and run for 15.5 miles. You have to experience the otherworldly silence and serenity of this kind of departure to begin to understand what Porsche is trying to achieve with this car.

In a world where noise and flamboyance don't necessarily engender good feelings in your fellow human beings, the 918 cuts an entirely new character: It looks like it just left a racetrack, but it glides like a Tesla. Only not for as long.

2014 Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid Ride-Along

Porsche Chick 02-11-2013 05:58 AM

Porsche Hybrid, only $845,000.

But you'll make that up in gas savings in no time. If you drive to the moon. :D
