Shelf instead of CD compartment?

Does anyone know how difficult it would be to remove the CD compartment (option # 424) and replace it with a second storage shelf in the dash of a 2003 S? Mine came with the CD compartment, but I think I'd get more use out of a second shelf. It's the item just below the radio, and appears above the shift knob in the picture.

Very easy. It just pops out. I used the plastic tools (purchasable at Pelican Parts or Harbor Freight for less) to remove my dash components. I too plan to replace my CD case. The part number is ...

996-552-253-01-01C-OEM $46.75 1 $46.75
Storage Shelf, Upper (Satin Black), Boxster 986 (1997-2004), Brand:
Genuine PORSCHE

Or you can buy it online at Eagle Day (where I first found it)

BOXSTER / 996 CONSOLE STORAGE SHELF

FWIW, be sure to keep the original part. There may be little blue caps on the back side you may need to transplant to the new part. Found that out on my environmental cover.

That would be a nice upgrade.
Any addition storage would be nice.

Thanks, all. This forum is amazingly friendly and helpful! Chris, the steering wheel is part of a bunch of custom leather interior upgrades the previous owner had done. I think I got a peach of a car from him. I've had it for 6 weeks and it's been in storage, except for the first 2 days, and maybe 100 miles that I got to drive it. Needless to say, I'm anxiously awaiting Spring!
