Oil Filter Debris... a mystery. Opinions?
While I figure out what to do with my IMS Guardian kit, I pulled the filter from my Boxster this afternoon. There was absolutely no ferrous or otherwise metallic debris on the filter media. Good news!!  There were, however, about 10 smallish particles that looked like plastic.  Here's what they look like:
Upon closer examination, it turns out that these small pieces are soft - rubbery, even. Below is a close up I took with my good camera - you'll be able to see that this piece has a circular, fluted shape.
As this stuff is soft, and there wasn't much of it, I think I've got nothing to lose sleep over. But the question is, what is it? Anyone have an idea??

Most likely excess sealant used to assemble the engine, which is common. When you remove the oil sump plate to install the Guardian you may find more sealant in the oil pump pickup.

i see little bits of plastic regularly when i cut the filter open. if you see metal then you need to worry.

I think Byprodriver is right. I've seen pictures of the oil sump that have the "worms" from the sealant that looks just like that.

I believe Dark plastic pieces are often the timing chain pads/guides. They sometimes look dark green or brownish under bright light.

Agree. The yellow or brown rubbery bits are excess engine sealant finally pulling free and the black plastic bits are most likely timing chain guide/tensioner pad material. Neither is a worry in normal circumstances.
