I want to paint my roll hoops
I'd like to paint my roll hoops body color. At least two questions. How does the padding come off and are the hoops removable or do they have to be painted in the car?
Any insight greatly appreciated.

The roll bar padding is removable. Use a screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry it off. Pops back on.
The hoops are part of the roll bar itself. The entire assembly can be removed. Just follow down to the four mounting points and unbolt. You will have to remove some of the interior parts to get access.

If you actually do this I'd love to see pics / docs of the process and where things actually are that have to be removed...

I am pretty sure, to remove the roll bar, you have to remove the cabrio top first.

Whip, what did you do? Got some details? I don't think I want to remove the whole cabrio top, if that is required to remove the roll bar.

I painted my pads. The front side, not the back 'overlays'. They pop off pretty easily, be careful not to damage the clips inside of the roll bar. A few coats (i have about 6) of vinyl paint and they are good to go! A great looking mod.

Whip what are your thoughts on the quality of the plastic covers? I am curious especially as they seem to attach with strong double sided stick tape and I assume that is hard to remove...

When removing the roll bar padding it is best to use a flat head screwdriver, make sure you put a few layers on electrical tape over the blade potion so you do not scuff your roll bar paint. Watch out for those little clips…if you have a black interior they are hard to spot when they come out. Sometimes the plastic clips end up on the padding side too. Just pay attention when doing it and you'll be fine.
There are 3 clips on one roll bar hoop and two in the middle. I start by popping the bottom of the hoops, the second clip is in the middle, with two undone it is easy to see the third.
Much more simple than it sounds….don't forget the tape!

The quality of the plastic is good. It's the quality the paint job that matters the most. I got a great paint job and it paid off. The roll bars on my 987 are painted from factory and they look awesome, obviously the overlays aren't that good but from behind they look sharp.
