Even though everybody drives 85 here anyways it would be nice for it to be legal.
There are parts of Texas that one could drive for hours without seeing a soul.

They should open one in NY too and put an enormous toll on it, then all the truckers and cheapskates would be off if it. Every now and then Texas does something that makes me scratch my head but they do some cool things too, NY just tries to tell you how much sugar you can eat and raises property taxes. Just think if every state caught on it would be like going golfing, a weekend drive at warp speed in the Boxster.

states should offer some sort of toll / higher speed options. great way to raise some revenue. i know i'd shell out for them, especially between major cities. in/around cities is obviously a non-starter...

It disgusts me that the contracting company was contracted solely out of conflict of interest for this project. Nonetheless, it is good to see an interest in less restricting speeds but I personally find it could be faster.

If only the disgust stopped there! Often traffic lights & speed limits are changed on the current roads to slow travel on these "competing" roads & encourage toll road usage.
I have read about this being done in Dallas in the past. I also have 1st hand experience of Texas revenue enhancement techniques in Calhoun county.

The idiots around here already drive 90+. That'd just encourage them to go 120 and set cruise control.

But it would be nice if late at night, speed limits were increased 10-15mph. For highway/expressway driving.

Drove to Boxtoberfest today from the DFW area with some others, 14 vehicles total. 85 was the slow lane

Exactly... it's not the speed limit that needs to be adjusted.. they need to just enforce the damn "cruising" in the left lane idiots... UGH!!! that drives me nuts.

Hope everyone has noticed that the new 85mph highway (Hwy130) is just outside of Austin and very close to the new F1 track. Don't know about you, but I'll be there for the race in November, and to take a shot at that new road.

Wow. 85mph seems dangerous when considering the general level of driving skills that we all see demonstrated on the roads daily.

It's totally a money making proposition. The toll road is owned by a Spanish consortium and think the higher speed will generate some bucks. The state even lowered the surrounding speed limits to help the consortium. So typically in TX when it's 65 they are done 10 -15 mph higher, it maybe a nice way to strech the legs on your Boxster if live nearby..

The highway is fine, but I hope they open the F1 track for trackdays... THAT will be fun!

Only part of the highway is posted at 85 MPH. The first 28 miles are posted at 80 MPH, and the rest (about 12 miles for us) was 85 MPH.

It's a toll road too, so you'll be billed for it.

The route is almost void of traffic because of the toll, and the experience is more of an Autobahn thing than anything else. Personally, I prefer the country road apex-carving deal. But on this road, one can certainly pound down the miles quickly. We passed a TX Highway Patrol officer doing 92, and he didn't bat an eye.

And yes, you go right by COTA.

We'll be there for the GP.
