Convertible Top Push Rod Repair?

I need to replace the drivers side push rod. I am not able to compare the length of the old one because it broke off and was severely bent at some point.

How would I go about making sure the new rod is the correct length before installing? I dont want it to bend again obviously.

I had the same issue. I looked closely at the original (bent) rod and measured where the witness mark was on the slot from the washer. I marked it at the same spot on the new rod and set it appropriately. You could also try measuring the position of the other side rod - it's important that they be the same length.

Peter...Thanks. I am going to go with matching it to the right (undamaged) side.

What do you think caused the failure and severe bending of the original rod?

Anyone else? Ideas?

Most likely the plastic socket broke first (they do that when they get old and brittle). This allowed the rod to drop down out of position and, the next time the top was actuated, the rod got jammed against something and bent as the top was lowered/raised.

When you replace the rod you also need to examine the foam tray to make sure it has not been punctured/ripped/mangled otherwise you will get water in the cabin next time it rains, resulting in wet carpet and possibly a fried central alarm unit.

Thanks Mark. Looks like I will need some silicone to seal the rips also!

DEFINITELY check for a broken drive cable if you've bent a rod. The cable breaks on the driver's side, the passenger side is still working and forcing the top closed, and *crunch* - the driver's side rod collapses.

Whoa...Peter...Where is the drive cable? Any pictures of where/what I should look for?
