Most likely the plastic socket broke first (they do that when they get old and brittle). This allowed the rod to drop down out of position and, the next time the top was actuated, the rod got jammed against something and bent as the top was lowered/raised.

When you replace the rod you also need to examine the foam tray to make sure it has not been punctured/ripped/mangled otherwise you will get water in the cabin next time it rains, resulting in wet carpet and possibly a fried central alarm unit.
