Remember your first ride in a sports car?

I was fourteen when I had my first ride in a sports car. I was sitting on the 'hump' between my two older brothers in a '56 Jag XK140. The car was black with wire wheels, a split windshield and cut down doors. It was in Quebec one summer night in August , 1967 , on the 640 Hwy. I remember when we hit about 120 MPH all the dust and dirt lifted off the floor and got in our eyes. Good thing no one else was on the road that night.

DFW02S 04-07-2011 07:19 AM

Does a Mustang count? LOL
I was 13 and there were 6 of us in the car ..... and then 3 of us in the trunk.
I just remember it being dark and hot!
Oh wait, 1967 too.

1970

two trips, first one drove a brand new mg sprite from calgary to edmonton, and then a short time later repeated the same trip in a brand new TR6 w OD in the pouring rain. my dads cousin had a austin healey mk3 but i can't remember getting a ride in it...

best drive was in a 1950's merc 300sl gullwing coupe, once around the block.

How could I forget ! :)

March 1969 - going over the River Severn on the then new bridge which goes into Wales in the UK.
My cousin had recently bought an Alfa Romeo 1300 GTA (the lightweight alloy bodied job) and while I was over visiting he asked me if I wanted a spin - whoo what a car. I remember watching the tacho sweeping up to the redline in every gear except 5th - something no other car I had ever been in could do that!
It took me another 2 years to buy my first Alfa 105, after which I had another 6 over the next 20 years.
When I last spoke to my cousin, he still owned the GTA - probably worth a lot of money now....

The year was 1957!

I was a young Lieutenant stationed in Iceland. I had seen a 1956 Austin Healey driven by another officer back in the states and I decided that I had to have one. I bought a 1957 100-6 from an Icelandic dealer and had it shipped back to New York. Terrific little sports car and loads of fun to drive. I eventually bought a 1960 Mark ll and later a 1965 3000. Sure wish I had kept one of them.

10 years old, walking home from school when my Scoutmasters son stops in his XK120. Took me for a 10 min ride. 4years later I bought a wrecked Spitfire and the vicious cycle has yet to stop. Just one more car Honey, this is the car I really want. Ed

my dad bought a 1970 Jaguar XKE convertible when he came back from vietnam. my brother & i were born several years later. once we got old enough, we would sit on the rear decklid with our feet behind the front seats, holding on to the headrests. mom & dad would drive us all over the place. wonderful time.

Tobz 04-08-2011 03:47 AM

First time I was in a proper sports car driven hard and to the limit was in 02 in a Toyota soarer twin turbo..... Was the most amazing thing feeling the torque that thing had!

When I got home I made my mum sell her mg and buy an s2000.... That thing was awesome, best decision she ever made!

Ever see the movie "Hooper" with Burt Reynolds ?? Remember Tony the AD with the bull horn ?? He was born and raised in my neighborhood. He was the first guy I ever saw run for pleasure and not 'cause someone was chasing you.

Well, he had a BRG Triumph TR-3 and when I was 7 or 8 he took me for a spin. Been hooked ever since.

To the point I had a BRG TR-3, and a Spitfire (they were called "chick cars" too) a TR-250, a Midget, 67 MGB, the list goes on.

Before I bought the Boxster, I had considered a TR-6...I'm glad I changed my mind.

landrovered 04-08-2011 11:52 AM

My fathers 1959 Mercedes 190 SL, I pulled all the knobs off the dash board when I was three years old.

SeanZ4 04-08-2011 12:45 PM

In the early 70s my uncle had an older Jag XKE. That's my earliest memory of riding in a sports car. My first car (high school) was a '70 MGB. It's been an incurable addiction ever since.

1975. A buddy bought a Triumph TR4. No power but still a blast to cruise around in with the top down. Even though the car wasn't white, our theme song cranked as loud as the cheap stereo would go was "The Boys in the Bright White Sports Car" (Trooper).

He traded it to another buddy the following year for a 396 Chevy 4-door boat. The new owner repainted it fire engine red, and it was like: Wow! Where was that car hiding?

He was driving it down the freeway a year or two later and one of the wheels and associated suspension fell off. (No one hurt.)

jmatta 04-08-2011 02:43 PM

JD...How funny...now there's a total "chick car" package.

Back on topic; my elder brother purchased a 1969 911S (Tangerine) back in 1973, when I was a Jr in HS. He actually taught me to drive it and I was hooked from that point on (wish I had that car now). My first Porsche was a 1974 914 "Bumble-Bee", as that's all I could afford after college. Countless 911s later, I am fond of my Box and have taught my son to drive and am working on my daughter.

tdurnan 04-08-2011 06:19 PM

Mid 70's spitfire. I was about 6 I think. LEt to a fascination with MG's and British cars, followed by an all to rocky love affair with one, and now back to the roadster relationship with a Boxster. Still love the look of the old brit car though, something really well done about the old fenders just classy looking.

Jager 04-09-2011 09:23 PM

1982 in Germany, I road in a new 911 on some crazy winding roads near Langerkoph. I was amazed at how many G’s that car was pulling through the corners. A couple weeks later I enjoyed a cruise in a Targa (with the top off)… I was sold, I wanted a Porsche!

I don't remember my first ride in a sports car, but my first ride in a Porsche was awesome!

I flew out to California to visit some Family/Friends and my Dad's friend picked my up in his 1999 white C4S Cab. It had the coolest wheels and a GT3 front bumper. His wife brought their other car so she could take my luggage and I could go in the Porsche.

It was about 9 or 10 at night when we left the airport and we had some fast fun on the way home.

I'll never forget that.

I bought an old mk4 Austin Healy Sprite when I was about 19 ('79). It had the same engine as the 1275 GT mini. I can't remember if it was fast. The drivers door wouldn't open and so you had to climb in with the top down. When you changed gear the back end whipped sideways. Found that one of the U bolts on the rear axle had no retaining bracket. When it came time to sell it I took it to local car auction. Bidding went to 150 pounds. Auctioneer said 'you'll not get much more than that son'. I said no thanks paid the fee and took it home. Next auction day when the sun was shining I entered it again with the roof down and the cover buttoned down got 350 pounds and later sold the hardtop for another 20.
A few years back I bought an old Lotus Eclat. Not too pretty to look at, but that was a fast car.

Datsun 240Z

I was in college when Datsun brought out the 240Z. I couldn't afford one, but the salesman didn't know that. British Racing Green with a medium brown interior. I'd been driving a '58 Fairlane, so you can imagine the difference in handling. I couldn't believe the visceral reaction I had to that car. The look, the feel, the smell all added up to one exciting drive. Sure wish I could have afforded one.

Here's a back end view of the Lotus. Nice car to drive, very low on the road. This was a first edition model. The fibre glass body sat on a non-galvanised chassis and Lotus thought it was agood idea to cushion the body on strips of foam sittting on top of the chassis. As soon as the foam got wet the chassis started to rust. My one needed major work on the chassis rear cross member. Second generation models had a galvanised chassis. Nice car to work on. Some engine parts were hard to get to, the distributer sat horizontal so you couldn't look down at the points. The carbs were twin DeLortos. You could set them up without too much difficulty with a Morgan Carb Tune kit, four glass tubes with rods that connected to the carbs by rubber hoses to tune and balance. Lot of them shipped to the states where they lasted a lot better. I liked that car.

I found a couple of pictures of my first sports car today - a 1968 Fiat 124 spyder.
The car was a lot of fun to drive and pretty quick considering it only had a
1438cc engine.

Ghostrider 310 03-16-2012 02:10 PM

This is a photo of the first sports car I ever drove on a learner's permit, my sister didn't set the brake it rolled into a neighbor's garage and was totaled before I could buy it. I still have a 124 but I can't drive it anymore.

I don't remember the exact ride, but when I was still in the low single digit age my dad had '67 Corvette convertible, followed later by a '72 Vette. I used to "drive" while sitting in his lap. A succession of sports and sporty cars pretty much ensured the path I would take

linklaw 03-16-2012 06:23 PM

First ride in a sports car was in a 1966 Yenko Stinger Corvair. My neighbor bought one new and when we were kids we would ride to the swimming pool in it. I was 6 years old. First sports car owned was a 1966 MGB in 1980. Since then I have had E-Types, TR's, MG's, 911's, Fiats, an XK120, Mercedes sl's, Healeys (both 3000 and Sprites), Morgan, AC, RX7 and am on my second Boxster. By far, the most fun I have had with a sports car has been with the Boxsters. Every time I drive it I smile.

fivepointnine 03-16-2012 06:40 PM

my first car was a Merkur XR4Ti, sorta sports car? My older brothers always had muscle cars when I was young, my favorite was my one brothers turquoise 65 Mustang 289 4v fastback,I rode in that car quite a bit. My other brother had a 67 Camaro at the same time

AndyA6 03-17-2012 07:53 PM

As a kid in my Dad's '65 911, he actually let me drive it!

wvboxst3r 03-18-2012 03:52 AM

My first true ride was when I test drove my current Boxster. The closest sports car before that was a 76Camaro that my dad bought me. I loved that beat up car so much. I was sixteen and worked on it everyday with dad until he became sick a out 4 months then passed away. I have never even really looked at one until this year, it still feels weird knowing how much my dad would love this car.

97 Boxster 03-18-2012 04:42 AM

My first ride in a sports car was to jr high in a mustang 5.0 -1985

So awesome. My first "owned" sports car was an 88 or 89 Saab SPG. That was a fun car when that turbo kicked in.

2003S 03-18-2012 05:53 AM

Dad was a Vette man. He, my brother and I (yes, the three of us) used to cruise the back roads of Michigan's U.P. in his red '72 Vette.

Beautiful car! My Tr6 was my first sports car, my father gave it to me on my 16th birthday, It had been sitting for eight years and I slowly brought it back to life. I rarely drive it because it holds too many memories. The first sports car I ever rode in was my Fathers MGCGT (wish he still had that one) and when I was five I used to shift the car as we drove around. Here is a pic of my Tr6. Great car but amazing how small it is and feels like a tank in a good way.

1963, I was four years old. My Dad's 1953 356. Silver, red interior.

I would wait for him to drive into the basement garage after work, then carry his coffee thermos upstairs for him, eager to be helpful!

I'd rarely get to sit in the front seat, because my three older brothers unwilling to share! I got to know those back seats very well over the years. (More often, I rode on the platform above the engine in our VW bus in those days ... no doubt you'd be in big trouble if you let a kid ride there now. )

Porsche wasn't a rich man's car then, and we far from rich. Partly to get back in shape, and partly to save money, Dad rode a bicycle seven hilly miles each way to work for years before buying that then-beat up Porsche. He restored it and drove it to work.

After that car came a 1960 356B, which got wrecked, then, in 1972, a 1966 912, which he has restored three times, and still drives to car shows, now at the age of 84.

When I got my well-worn 1998 Silver/Boxster Red 986, because of these memories, I experienced a deep joy even beyond what I expected.

2003S A tale of woe, my uncle had a Vette just like that, a 69 with factory hard and soft tops. He gave it to his son for a wedding present, son puts car in wife's name to cut down on insurance. They divorce, wifey takes car, sells car in 1987 for $6,000.00 without telling anyone, I would have bought it the mileage was 50,000.

ProjectM96 03-19-2012 12:28 PM

Well the first sports car I drove just happened to be a 98 Boxster 2.5L when I was 16. Have driven 40+ sports/muslce cars after that including the 350z, 300zx TT, NSX, classic and new Mustang's and Camaro's, Chevelle SS, Classic and new Corvette's(C3, C4, C5,C6), Evo, STI, SL55 AMG, M3, M5, 911(964 Carrera, 996 Carrera, 996 4S), RX-8, Miata, Viper SRT-10, TT, GTI, 645i, etc.

And I still ended up going for the Boxster since it was most fun to drive in my opinion.

That stinks - I remember sitting in the driveway behind the wheel of that car for hours on end when I was 5. Until one day I pulled the e-brake handle, and rolled it back into the street.

Took all of my weight to stand on the brake, while my brother happily ran inside to tell dad!

I just got ungrounded last week. :D

Yes MGB, London England

Been hooked on sports cars ever since

...best sports car ride would have to be a Caterham 7 (275 hp) test drive from the dealership around Biggin Hill and back. It took enraged citizens 5 min to catch up ....had enough time to unharness myself and run away...that thing took my breath away

Cub scouts

We had one when I was a kid, my Dad use to race. One of our other cars was a convertible; I was to young to remember my first time in a sports car. We used to hide under the tonneau cover. Sports Cars were normal. But I do remember when the Country Squire wagon was in the shop, and my mom had to take ten (10) of us, on both sides, under and up across the back of our MGA to a cub scouts meeting.

southernstar 04-20-2012 08:52 AM

In 1966 my older brother bought his first car - a 1961 Austin-Healey 'Bug-eyed' Sprite in baby blue. Gutless and primitive, yes, but a revelation after driving in my parent's typical full-size Chevs and Fords. Top down (actually, disassembled), side curtains off and wind in the hair while seemingly blasting through the twisties. Been hooked ever since!

Snowman 04-20-2012 10:31 AM

First sports car ride for me was my pop's 1968 Triumph TR250. It would have been around that same time. He kept it for several years and it was his daily commuter. He eventually traded it in on an early 70s Firebird, no slouch itself. Both were fun from a little kid as passenger perspective.

Ancosta 04-20-2012 11:03 AM

Not a sports car by real standards but when my grandfather bought an early 80's 200sx I thought he was the coolest dude around.
