Sooo i blasted the heat today.....

and black foam chips were coming out of the vents......wtf?

Don't know anything about your car, but I would guess its over 10 years old and the foam seams in the HCAV duct are crumbling away. Once they all blow out, the problem goes away.

I recall reading that there's a flapper that has foam on it. I think there was also a way of dealing with it. Search... You might try RennTech too.
