My wife's 2002 S (30K miles) had the same issue. The whine would disappear under 25 mph. Putting the car in neutral and revving the engine would not change anything. Applying the brakes while driving would not change the whine either. I was convinced that it might be a wheel bearing. Just before I took it to the shop the whine went away. It's been 4k miles and not a peep. Still concerned, tho.

High Pitch Whistling Noise from Passenger Side

I have an 03’ Boxster with 105k. I have been hearing this mysterious, high pitch, whistling noise from the passenger side for over a year. It comes once I hit over 30mph, and it completely disappears under 20mph. Coincidently, it started after I had the rear tires replaced and front alignment done. It echoes next to curb or another car. Sound does not vary with speed.

I finally couldn’t stand it any longer and took it to the shop earlier today. I will post an update once, if, they figure out what it is.
