Engine Identificaition?

Hi all,

A newby here. I just purchased a 99 Boxster on the weekend and I have a bit of a stupid question. After going through stacks of receipts from the dealer, it looks as though my car has a 2.7L. According to one of the invoices, the dealer confirmed that the car has a 2.7, and that some 99s were sold with 2.7s. Does this sound right? Is there any way to visually identify the engine? Is there a code somewhere on the engine that would tell me what it is? Would the VIN tell me? Any help you guys can offer would be great.

You'll need to find the engine code stamped on the bottom of the case and compare to these to be certain.


M96.20 - 986 2.5

M96.21,24 - 986 S 3.2

M96.22,23 - 986 2.7

The engine number is stamped on the right hand side, slightly to the rear behind the 3 header pipes where the block meets the oil pan.
You will need a cleaning rag and a powerfull torch or light to see it.....

as the engine controls for the 2.5 and 2.7 were different. Different DME. Different wiring harness. Different accelerator to throttle control mechanism (mechanical wire versus computer). Could someone have done an aftermarket conversion of a 2.5 to a 2.7? Yes but rare.

Interesting that the stealer told him that some 99's had been sold with 2.7's. AFAIK the 2.7 didn't show up until MY2000.

I believe, that if a model year (e.g., 2000) comes into the dealer and is sold prior to January 1 of that year, it is licensed as a prior year car (1999). That is, you buy (take ownership and license) a 2000 model year vehicle sometime in 1999.

At least that is the way it seems to work here in CA. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
