rear fog lights

this is very low priority but... I just realized I have rear fog lights on my 02 boxster. the rt rear fog light was out so I went to replace the bulb but the bulb was fine. connections and wires that I can see all look fine. tried the new bulb anyway. no luck. where should I look next to trace this down.

You're only supposed to have one working rear fog light. That is so that when you're driving in fog, the person behind you doesn't think you're slamming on your brakes. The one light should be lit to let the person know that there's a car in front of them.

oh...ok. thanks. wonder why they bother putting a bulb in both sides? can you switch to one side or the other?

I didn't bother to ever look if there was a bulb in mine. Maybe they put it in there for European cars that drive on other side of the road.

We only have one rear fog light. On the left side (drivers side).

In the USA, we drive on the right side of the road. Our Cars are left hand drive. Our rear fog light helps to illuminate the safe side, for an upcoming car, to pass you (and see you better).

Suspect previous owner put it in trying to get it to work as there was only a bulb in the left side of my '99 when I checked...

LHD cars have the light on the left. RHD cars have the light on the right. This is because it provides the greatest visibility through a curve - you'll lose sight of it later when it's on the inside of the curve.

Some cars, such as Audi have the lights on both sides. There is no reason for this except to make the car correct for any market - no need for market specific wiring harness.
