18" wheel width recommendations

I am going to purchase a set of 18's to mount my summer tires on. I have a 99. The 18" OEM wheels for that year were 7.5 and 9 wide. Most wheel offerings are 8 and 10 wide. Is there any problem going with the wider wheels? What are some recommendations, advantages or disadvantages?

The 2000 S wheel option was 18x7.5 front and 18x10 rears. Unless there is a significant difference in wheel mounting between the 99 and 2000 S, (besides the obvious differences of S vs non S suspension/brakes) the wider wheels should fit your car. Wider tires will give you better dry handling and better looks. On the down side, it will give you a slightly heavier steering feel, more expensive tires, and worse wet weather handling.

It's not just width that's the issue, but also offset. That said, I'm no expert on the topic. Search this site, there a lots of posts on this subject. There are also some good tech articles on tirerack.com.

If you've got specific wheels in mind, it might be good to post a photo along with all the specs including offset. Chances are good someone else has them or has investigated and found they wouldn't fit.

Thanks for the info. I really like these wheels from Eurosport, 18" Porsche Carerra 4S Style Wheels. They are available in the proper offset, 50 front and 46 rear. Has anyone had any experience with them? BH

I have my original 2006 Boxster S wheels available. They are 18x8 front and 18x9 rear. Full info is in Boxster parts for sale section. Greggdacat has a set on his 986, so I think they fit without spacers.
