I just went to the local dealership. Gave them my year and model and since they were so cheap (45 cents) I bought a couple. Plus, this had the side benefit of me being able to google at all the shiny new cars.

I have a bag of them in the garage, but not sure if they are for the Box or the 911...maybe they fit both?

chitowndad 10-25-2009 07:43 AM

thanks

I ended up ordering a filter and crush rings from Pelican parts. My local Carquest charged me $20 for just the filter and didn't have the crush rings and Pelican has the filter for $10.50 and the rings - Thanks for the info on Pelican parts.

Walmart

So this is really frustrating.

Walmart has Castrol 10W-30 full Synthetic for $22 for 5 qts but no 10W-40 or 5W-40

At Autozone, I found 10W-40 Castrol full Synthetic but it was $6.99 a quart - too expensive.

Walmart also has 0W-40 Mobil 1 in the 5 quart jug for around $22 but I want to go with Castrol and I think I need either 5W or 10W....

Any ideas?

I last did an oil change last summer (switching to Castrol 10W-40), and got the oil (on sale) at Walmart. However, I didn't find that weight at the Walmart I usually go to---had to drive a few miles down the road to another one.

Apparently there is some variation between Walmarts as to what they carry...

try advanced auto parts. There is also a new chain with some Irish name that has been popping up in this area and maybe yours. I think its oreily's. Remeber stores price match if you find it cheaper at one. I had to use quarts as I couldn't find jugs.

Surf the net and find the local Castrol distributor. Most likely they'll do 'City Desk' or 'Will Call' sales. Ususally even cheaper than wally world!

Castrol

This is driving me nuts! I went to 3 different Walmarts, Kmart and every parts store in the Naperville/Aurora area and while I can find Castrol Synthetic 5W-40 but it's $6.99 per quart! WTF. I may have to go with Mobil 1, Ugh IK really wanted to switch to Castrol!

941MXVET 11-03-2009 05:46 PM

Honestly, $6.99 is much less then I paid for Royal Purple 5w-40, and currently pay for Redline 5w-40.

I think if your that close to you margin, I wish you the best with Porsche ownership.

Ounce of prevention = a pound of cure.

Besides, with all that driving wouldn't you have already wasted the cost difference?

Jaak 11-03-2009 06:53 PM

A rebuild on a 3.2 is about $9,000 ... a few extra bucks for oil ... no issue ... I would rather spend a few extra bucks to protect the investment.

chitowndad 11-03-2009 07:04 PM

Ok

All right I'll stop acting like a cheap bastard! LOL :o)

Nothing wrong with wanting to save some dough. In the future, look for deals as you can find bargains on Castrol from time to time.

Good luck.

Pep Boys

So I found a special on Castrol Synthetic at Pep Boys, 5 quarts and a filter for $27.99. Yeah!

Deals like that are all over the place at one time or another and sometimes even cheaper. As I go through the Sunday paper I always look at the auto store ads and if I see what I need I will go and get as many as my wallet will allow at the time and build up a stock. I use the usually good filters for my other autos and come out ahead. I put on around 8K per year and change my oil twice per season. This s one way I have to keep the maintenance costs down. I also buy air filters, cabin air filters and oil filters 3 or 4 at a time off Ebay and save money on the cost and on shipping. Ed

Bozos

So the last time I took my car in to have the oil changed at a local oil place which overfilled the car. Today I changed the oil myself and the bozo's that did it last time didn't replace the spring in the oil filter!

Now I know why I do it myself!

If I recall correctly, the spring is used as some form of a bypass, right?

Here in Fairbanks Alaska, the local parts store has Castrol Syntec and Mobil 1 for $8.99/qt , some places as high as $9.99/qt . $6.99 doesn't seem too bad, you'll end up spending an extra $10 per oil change and that's a small price to pay for better protection as these cars are not cheap econoboxes (no pun intended) so you'll end up paying more for everything.
