Old Thread Back from the Dead
Last fall a great debate raged over desnorkling. Some said it generated a small increase in HP. Others said no it does not change HP it is purely auditory. Finally another group insisted desnorkling actually reduced HP and they had since resnorkled.
Then one voice in the wilderness said they would resolve the debate once and for all. (Jake, maybe). They said they would dyno the same car with and without the snorkle to see who was right.
Since that time I have heard nothing. Did anyone try this? If so what was the result?

I was referring to the second thread.
In the first one, the way I read it, the guy running the test really did not desnorkle but instead removed some type of restrictor plate. It was in the second thread it was decided to dyno a car with and without the snorkle. However, if you read the thread all the way through they never follow up.

I don't think Jake ever followed up with the results. I really would prefer to have my snork out, as I like the louder intake sound, but my butt dyno feels a loss of power on the freeway with the snork out when compared to when the snork is in place, and I'd rather have speed than noise.
You could actually test this theory on our own (without a dyno) if you wanted: If your snork is out already, do 5 or more consistent runs on the freeway from say, 40-80mph (in 3rd gear, for example), and time your results. Then, do the same thing after putting your snork back in place, and record the timed results. It's a crude test, but perhaps it can finally answer the question. I would do it myself, but after breaking a grille tab on the intake housing when putting my snork back in (and installing a new grille), I don't want to go back there. The other thing I'm not sure about as far as a Dyno is concerned, is whether or not a dyno run properly simulates the real amount of air that will be passing into the intake at speed.
If you end up finding out that the car is faster with the snork out, let me know, and I'll pull that sucker out again immediately!

You are correct. Unless your chassis dyno has a wind tunnel surrounding it.. you will not get accurate results.
I'm kinda tired of seeing all the drivers side vents loose and falling out on cars that have been "de-snorked"

I think the whole thing is overated.
1) know one can give a definitive hp change so I'm going to bet there isn't one of significance. If you need a wind tunnel to test it, I'd say it pretty miniscule/
2) I did it, had to Micky mouse the loosened vent back in (Brad), and frankly as for sound, I could barely hear the difference with the top down (almost always)...certainly didn't turn the head of the hotty in the Honda next to me.
Maybe I'm numb, but to make a significant diff on both counts takes some heavier lifting than a plastic pipe.
