95 and 81 are quite often used by trucks. i've driven them several times and it's not that bad. yes sometimes little rocks and pebbles are thrown up, but no more than any other major interstate that i've encountered.

it's not enough to keep me from making my way down there a few times a year.

....yes i was more concerned with the route down like i75 etc. It is a long way from Canada

75 is not a bad trip at all. It is way better than 95 traffic wise.

Maryville, TN is the best closest place to stay with many options. Chain hotels are around 80 to 100 a night, nice clean older motor motel rooms for <50. Plenty of restaurants, bars etc. Townsend, TN is at the foot of Smoky Mountains national park and has a few motels at a decent price, or even some very high end places if you prefer that.
