The 2003 and 2004 911 block have Vario cam Plus that would not be suitable for a Boxster before 2007. The second Vario cam Valve has no connection point in the 7.8 DME harness. Similar to trying to run a 2003 to 2006 Boxster engine in a 2002 or older car with a 7.2 ECU.

Actually, you CAN install a 996 engine in a '03 or '04 Boxster with ME 7.8. You just need to add the wires to the harness for the additional cam adjuster actuators. After that, you simplify flash the DME with 996 code. BTDT. The DME itself is the same part number in the late 986 and 996.
