11.8v is pathetic after a full charge. Are you measuring at the battery posts or the connections?
Test the battery or take it to Autozone/Pep Boys to test.Dead cell?
Make sure the battery cables/connections are clean and tight.Cut back a little insulation on the cables to make sure they are not corroded.
If it is the alternator,remember you can replace just the voltage regulator on the back of the alternator if that is faulty
