I'm not sure this will help your confidence any but the low fuel light on mine is off as well. When my light comes on I can only fill 12.5 to 13 gallons. My light comes on when the gauge is about half way between E and 1/4. Car specs say it a 16+ gal tank. Once the pump kicks off I've stop trying to pump any more, because it will just puke back out.
