Hell, you'd probably come out farther ahead financiall replacing with used and then just trading it in, as opposed to trying to sell it without a working tranny.
He still needs to have his wife's MAF cleaned and her throttle body lubricated and checked for vacuum leaks, and be sure to plug any leaks found.
