One place where many auto manufacturer's cut cost is in the head unit, especially on pre-2005 cars, and Porsche was no exception. Also very few manufacturers put a top end sound system into a convertible (any convertible) because of the poor acoustics (no point in having a great sound system if you can't hear it over the engine and road noise).

If you really want top end audio, you're probably going to have to replace the entire system (head unit, dash and rear compartment speakers, door subwoofers, and amp) before you will be satisfied.

For reference, the base sound system in the Miata is 10 times worse than the Boxster but the BOSE upgrade in the Miata is much better than anything in the older Boxsters.
