Are you absolutely certain that none of the little microswitches beneath the little rubber pads are stuck down?

The LED staying on continuously is usually a sign that one of the switches is stuck. Maybe try a shot of electrical cleaner spray aimed directly at the switch to se if there might be some dirt under there that might get flushed away.
