I have driven a Tip S and currently have a std Box with Tip. With the tranny in "D", the fact that it starts in second gear softens the response to the point where I didn't think there was a great deal of difference off the line between the S and the standard car. To start in 1st you have to either floorboard the throttle, or shift into manual.
I would doubt seriously that your better half would have any trouble with the Tip S. She is more likely to squawk about not having anywhere to put her purse when both of you are in the car.
