HPDE in Arizona Sandstorm

Went out on the track this past Saturday at Arizona Motorsports Park (AMP). Pro-Autosports ran the track CCW for the first time, and it was a blast (once you get comfortable with it). Just a few cars left when I ran this 4th session of the day

This is where I killed my passenger side axle from loosing too much grease, but didn't notice it until today.

Video may not be completely uploaded yet, but here it is anyway.

Nice driving, tons of fun~

A couple of observations

Remove or at least close the ashtray. You don't want anything flying around in a spin or acrobatics (hopefully not!!)

You may want to hold 3rd gear a bit longer and save a few up/down shifts going into T 9 and T4. In a S, 3rd is good to around 97/98 before hitting the rev limiter. You will provably carry a little more speed on the straight that way. Of course, that extra speed may require an up shift and then down shift YMMV. If your not almost banging the rev limiter, you may be shifting too soon

Thanks JayG.
My ashtray cover doesn't close I will convert it to a storage bin this summer.
Funny you mention banging the rev limiter, since I just went through an issue where during the last DE, I got distracted in 2nd passing someone and forgot to shift so it went up to 7,600 RPM before I shifted into 3rd. After the event, I reviewed the data log file to confirm this happened and it did. I went back to the shop that tuned my car (Vivid Racing) to explain to them that this should not happen (that is why there is a rev limiter, I did not ask to remove the rev limiter). They re-flashed with a supposedly "good" tune, but I did not "test" the rev limiter on this last outing at AMP since I was very conscious of this and a little shy of the redline... So on a couple of the straightaways, I could probably push it some more in 3rd, but on others, I'm hitting 103 so I would need 4th anyhow, so that is why I shift a little early

I know exactly what you mean. You are on a straight, gaining speed in 3rd and lots of track left.
Do I hold it to 7k and then shift up and then back down a few seconds later, or do I short shift and have more time in 4th to get the car settled before down shifting

The one thing you know is you don't want to stay in third and slow down

"Sandstorm" is a musical composition by Finnish DJ and record producer Darude. It was released as the lead single from his debut studio album Before the Storm. It was initially released in Finland on 26 October 1999 by 16 Inch Records and it was eventually re-released in many other countries in 2000. The song was uploaded to MP3.com where it gained global recognition. It has also gained recognition for its usage in sports and popularity in internet meme culture. On 1 March 2010, over ten years after its original release, "Sandstorm" was certified Gold in the United States by the Recording Industry Association of America for sales of over 500,000 copies.

That configuration has at least one place where I would be wondering if I should go to 2nd or leave it in 3rd. Lately I have been leaving it in 3rd unless I am going to drop below 40 MPH in the corner, then I will try 3rd. Leaving it in 3rd and going down to the high 30's takes a long time to recover from as it feels like it takes forever for the revs to get back over 4000.

Turns where I am dropping down to like 45, that is a toss up - like turn 7 at Road Atlanta. I could drop to 2nd and get a good pull, but that is a trickier shift and it seems to slow me down. In that case I decide to leave it in 3rd and see if I can find ways to bring up the vMin for that corner instead.

That is one place where I envy the PDK folks - they don't have to make those same compromises, they can always get the right gear to blast out of the corner

Yeah PDK is fast.
I've seen PDK Caymans scream as they drop down to 1st when I would have stayed in 2nd (autocross), and 2nd screaming for an instant when I would have just stayed in 3rd... but yes, they are fast

My 3.2 is tuned with a 74 mm TB, so it has some nice torque down low. Before the tune, I would prefer to stay above 4,000 rpm, but now I can go a bit lower and still pull out pretty quick from a corner. I think the new to me 2006 reman engine has more torque than the original 2002, but I haven't dynoed it yet.

And especially now, I try not to exceed 6,700-6,600 rpm, so could I blast on to 7,200 redline and coast for an instant? Yes. But I'd rather shift to 4th early... save some wear and tear since I'm not competing
