Poor man's 787B
Oh boy, I got another 986. :D :D
I sold my RX7 and now I wanna have another rotary car. So why not 986 rotary car??? AND why not peripheral port rotary 986 car? AND WHY not quazi tube chassis peripheral port rotary 986 car?!! Here I go. Doing things I shouldn't do. LOL http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1706327612.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1706327982.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1706328110.jpg Oh and I wanna skin it with 914 panels... This is going to be one of the cars on the road. LOL |
Not quite sure what to say except you have more vision than me  Have fun and good luck

The more I look at it; I don't think I'm gonna chop too much off the front. I mean its all pretty relevant up there, not much to hack off. I am going with a center radiator and stuff, but for the most part that body stuff aint gonna change. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1706487156.jpg It wants the 914 parts :D |
I found rust!!!! I'm not concerned though. I mean.... tube chassis right??
http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1706762900.jpg Look at all the leg room!!!! :D :D :D http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1706762792.jpg |
Glad you are back!
Rotary sounds cool, not literally, ha! Not too sure about the 914 panels |

So K.E.P. makes adaptors for Porsche transaxles. I used a K.E.P. adaptor in my silver boxster. Great product, no issues with it. BUT they don't want to make an adaptor for this project of mine. I'm left with a few options. 1. use a 914 transmission with an adaptor plate. -4 speed trans = no good for peaky rotary power band -cable clutch -weird custom cv axles 2. use a 930 or G50 transmission. -I don't want to spend 5 times on the transmission than the rest of the entire build. 3. Make my own adaptor -I don't think I need to say why this is a bad idea 4. BEG AND PLEAD on my hands and knees for K.E.P. to make a one off adaptor for me. Honestly I think I'm gonna go with option 4 tomorrow. If that fails I'm gonna hunt down a VW bug adaptor and take it to a machinist friend of mine. He might be able to make something work. Worst case scenario I go with option 1. |
I'm working on a project, I'll upload some pictures soon.

This thing I'm doing is coming along nicely. I'm holding off on setting the suspension height till I finish cutting the body off, but I'm chomping at the bit and ready to weld. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1707623490.jpg |
Tubes....
http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1708560309.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1708560444.jpg Pulled the H6 out last weekend, I forgot how heavy M96 engines are. Took some life out of me dragging it around to get the car out of the bay so I could use the chainfall to hoist the engine in the back of my truck. If anybody wants a part I'm throwing away just let me know. Its all going to the dump (aka its free fifty) except for a couple of things I'm keeping for myself. |
So, I am pecking away at this. The front framing is proving to be a challenge. Just finding places to weld to is kinda difficult.
The rear is almost done. I want to set the ride hieght before I add in the last of the upright supports. I went too low (or at least I think I did); I'll know for sure when I get the front done and I can put some simulated weight in it. I did get my PP. Look at my PP. Its a nice PP, but it needs some scrubbing.... PP hehe. :D Ok no more Peripheral Port jokes. LOL http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1709786450.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1709786668.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1709786725.jpg |
I can't find anyone to make an adaptor plate, so I gave it a go.
The 986 flywheel has a piolet bearing inside it, so all I need is a machine shop to make a hubcentric adapter from the 13B to the 986 flywheel. Thrust and centering will be changed when I have that piece machined out, but for now this plate is "eyeballed" close enough so I can make motor mounts and an exhaust/intake/coolant pipe routing. Here are some shrunken pics of the insanity.... :D And I finished adjusting the rear ride height and welded in the last of the rear... I did the front too, but it looks all the same. ;) http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1711942341.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1711942403.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1711942439.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1711942481.jpg |
I saw this and thought of your build: English Translation- https://www-auto--motor--und--sport-de.translate.goog/tuning/porsche-914-umbau-boxster-986-rendering-design-entwurf/?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en-US&_x_tr_pto=wapp&_x_tr_hist=true
Original German: https://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/tuning/porsche-914-umbau-boxster-986-rendering-design-entwurf/ 914 design elements on a 986 chassis. Sadly not rotary, but maybe electric. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1712510800.jpg |

Wow very nice!

Here is the latest. This is the actual plates that mate the engine/trans. Cool thing is if this works I can make an adaptor to put any engine to the boxter trans. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gI2zRw5ltFw |
Not so shure about the chassis construction on the front and rear strut mountings.
Like the rotary engine idea. Especially when you consider to replace a bad engine design with a much worser engine design. :D |

Those wankels are pretty compact, did you think of throwing two in there instead of just one?

Haven't updated here in a while... most of my updates happen on RX7club.com. But here is more or less where it stands. I'm just hurring to make it into a "runner" by April. (there is a big rotary event in April in the mountains). http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1735777108.jpg This is sneaking the bendix past the intak/exhaust http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1735777270.jpg Mounting the starter to the front. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1735777343.jpg Intake, not much else going on here. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1735777756.jpg Side mounted alternator. Couldn't put it on the top like the factory cause of the starter and the cooling system. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1735777846.jpg and just an exhaust, nothing special. |
Getting closer.
All the coolant piping is done. Fuel lines and pump are in. Just a little bit more work and I'll know if my cheap chinese lathe and my 0 experience machining abilities rendered a usable adaptor. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1737783387.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1737783408.jpg |
Nice progress

As of now I'm just rebuilding the peripheral port. We'll know in the next week or so if my amateur machining on a Chinese lathe actually worked. LOL I don't know if this thing is gonna work or shake itself to death. Its been a fun journey regardless. I've been thinking of a W8 as a backup engine in case the rotary abomination doesn't pan out. :D |
|
Yeah, I'm not doing the 914 look.... its an FD now. LOL
http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02/fd1743454428.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02/fd21743454451.jpg |
Totally insane, But that's what i love.;)
|
Well, I towed it all the way up to the mountains a couple of weeks ago. Went up there for a rotary event; just a bunch of other rotary nut jobs like me. :D
http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1746421473.jpg While I was up there I got some more body panels from my "dealer" RX7parts.com. So I was able to fill in the rear wheel arches a little bit. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1746421600.jpg Man this thing is MEAN looking from the stern. Its cause the FD is supposed to have more car behind the rear tires, but I LIKE the way this looks. Too bad for anybody following me... I might kick some rocks up. lol http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02/tuck1746421678.jpg I also have discovered the rumors are true!!!! 8.5" turbo twist wheels fit on the front axle. And the wheel fitment couldn't be better. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1746421744.jpg |
|
The fact you are making it an FD rules. The Boxster has now become the Fiero of body swap life, lol.
|
I dragged its sorry butt outside today. I painted the engine bay, but its only the first coat (I like to stack lacquer paints).
Doesn't look too shabby. Almost done with the right side. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02/copy1752981579.jpg Also, here is the obligatory walk around video. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/B06lTakTKbE |
