My since six years temporary solution was to cut a piece of a regular car washing sponge and insert it in the hole. Only half way so it can be easily taken out while fueling. No issues yet.

Ethanol is really aggressive and it will chew up most rubber parts in the system.Some metal to I guess.
It is probably possible after a thorough investigation...
