Though i can't be of much help, my fiance's a4 suffered the same fate. They didnt pull the motor out. An independant did the rebuild as well. Good luck

Watch out for side wind gusts ( sand storms ).... and DON'T speed thru Victorville or Barstow. Stop in Barstow to have In n Out. It took me just under 6 hrs in a loaded Suburban to make the drive...

They were re-finished and never put back on. mint condition. Im in San Diego.
