I have a 2000 S with a complete IMS replacement (before there was
an IMSR), 2000 with IMSR, and a 1999 that
will have an IMSR after we replace the IMS failure.

I now have 2 Boxsters one for daily driving, one for the wife
and 2 more for parts. I've had several others over the years
that are now owned by friends and family.

New Boxster owners in/around Austin should acquaint themselves with
my mechanic in SE Austin.

He rebuilt my 2000 S daily driver 35K miles ago, has worked on many Boxster
and 911 engines and stores and works on my race cars and other Porsches that
I have.

you can contact him through my website. I focus on the driving and racing
and not so much on the wrenching -- But Danny is a good guy and a good mechanic.

Sort of a starving Indy -- but knows his Porsches == especially the Boxsters.
Not much to look at -- but good honest and reasonably priced work.

I'm a pretty new transplant to Austin. I have a 2001 Boxster, and just want to know recommendations on places to service it in the Austin area. Also, I need new rear tires. Any suggestions on where to go?

BT, it's kinda prideful to introduce yourself as new AND pretty.

I've always found that everyone looks pretty after my third margarita.

I have no particular repair shop info to pass along to you, but you should do what I did... hang out at a local dealership right after their service area closes and ask an exiting mechanic if he works on cars at home or who might do this at the dealership.

Most of them want tax free income and moonlight because the $60-90k a year they make as a Porsche Technician just isn't enough.

My tire recommendation is simple. Michelin PS2's. Not cheap, but worth every single penny. They remain true throughout their lifetime on your rims (no vibration) and will give you excellent grip in dry and wet weather. Of course, they're not good for cold weather under 40 degrees because they're ultra performance summer tires, but that's the case with any decent tire for our cars.

Thanks for the advice, on both the mechanic and the tires.

I've got P Zeros on now. The fronts are good. The backs are almost slick! I keep reading reviews between P Zeros an PS2s. I only drive about 5k/year because I'm out of town a lot. When I do drive, I want to have it respond like a go cart.

Any thoughts on buying tires online and having a shop put them on, vs. just going to a tire store? Price savings could be worth it.

Pirelli's are great but the compound is quite soft and they wear out quickly. I like the Michelin rubber's lasting ability combined with good grip.

Tire Rack sells tires at a good price and their shipping isn't outrageous... and you will save on sales tax. I buy from them and take my rims to a Discount Tire that has a Hunter 9700 series road-force balancing machine. This ensures the heaviest part of the tire is put on the lightest part of the rim... and they're all a tad heavier on one side. This reduces the number of weights used as well as unnecessary vibration which is a nagging issue on our cars for some reason.

Call Tire Rack and get a delivered price on two rear tires and then call Discount Tire and get a price for mounting and balancing your tires vs. buying the same tires through them. The price may be close.

I've found the Academy stuff adequate. Having lived in a skiing state most of the natives buy stuff at academy.It's usually tourists buying the more expensive fancy smanshy stuff.All you need is a good pair of ski bibs or a ski suit that is lightweight, waterproof and comfortable.Underneath, wear a good gramici sweater or flannel shirt, long underwear, pair of jeans or sweats.Anymore clothing than that and you'll get really hot.Also a good pair of woolen waterproof socks.For shoes, before you get to the slopes and get ski boots on I'd recommend Hi-Tec waterproof shoes/boots.snow boots are fine too.I just preferred the Hi-Tecs because they aren't as bulky and you don't have to lug extra shoes around like you would if you have snow boots with you.Most of the people I worked with while I was in Denver were the ones who recommended them.

I'm in Austin and just purchased a 2000 Boxster. I use David Moore at Moorespeed for service on my Ferrari and now on my Porsche. I was there yesterday picking up my Boxster after he changed my oil and replaced a couple of interrior parts that were worn.

Here is a list of the cars that were in his shop yesterday:
Ferrari Enzo

Porsche Boxster (mine)
Porsche 356

He had a Boxster engine in his lobby that recently grenaded from an IMS failure. It was interesting to see the internal damage on the engine.
