Unhappy I need help!

I need some insight. My 99 Boxster started showing a check engine light but was running fine. I finally got around to taking it to the dealer and they told me the DME was measuring ambient pressure wrong, 700 instead of 1000. This caused the MAF to burn out. They wanted to replace the DME and MAF for $2600. I dont have the cash to lay out so I wanted to get some opinions before just throwing $$$ at the problem. The dealer told me the sensor to measure the ambient pressure was in the DME, this just didnt seam right. Is there a sensor I can look for or is the DME the only area where the problem can be?

If I disconnect the battery, the car will drive for about an hour then show the check engine light again.

Any ideas guys?

See this link. Maybe there is a similar company in the US who repair the DME or you can send your DME to Germany ??? The site can be read in English too.

Alfred

I've just purchased a 98 Boxster and 2 weeks after I bought her an LCD screen had gone out in the instrument cluster. I called Porsche (because we all figure they would have all the answers)... Well, I described the problem and the tech told me I had to replace the entire cluster at a cost of $1200. Needless to say I was shocked!

I then found this forum and was fortunate to find out that the problem was a simple bulb - I saved 1,196 bucks. Keep searching and I'm sure there's a cheaper solution to fixing your problem.

Good luck!

I don't trust my dealer anymore. They gave me a $2k estimate on my top and it only cost me $450 to fix (I over payed too). The tech told me the transmissions were busted, completely untrue! And the other day they told me the door actuator was broken and had to be replaced, cost $400. It turned out the diagnosis was wrong and it only cost $40 to fix the problem! It looks like the dealer just wants to replace without trying to look closely at the problem.

NY dealers (away from Manhattan) need more competition - I'm not so pleased with my Albany dealer either. I was very happy with my Scottsdale, AZ dealer.
