Wow. It's hard to believe that a piston that is in that bad of shape didn't take out the entire motor.

Hi I believe I spotted it early. Right after I heard the voice I had the car towed to the mechanic.

Sounds like your mechanic did a good repair, BUT the cause MAY have been a leaking fuel injector washing oil from the cylinder wall causing the piston to crack. Recommend you remove the fuel injectors & have them pressure cleaned & tested before reinstalling, or the problem may happen again.

OE engine rebuilt,3.6 litre LN Engineering billet sleeves,triple row IMSB,LN rods. Deep sump oil pan with DT40 oil.

Brilliant diagnosis . It can do no harm.
When I dismantled & rebuilt my injectors as part of a total engine rebuild I was pleased to find the later/better '4 hole' version. I presume they are less susceptible to accumulating deposits and then leaking?

Don't know about that, I assume 4 holes are better than 1 for distribution & atomization.
