transmission???

Driving my 98 boxster, with a 5 speed transmission, the other day had to stop suddenly, there was a loud bang and i thought someone had hit me. then started to go again and the car would not move. The engine would rev up but i had no forward momentum. Im guessing the transmission went out. Any thoughts?.

I think its your clutch that broke and not the transmission. How does the clutch pedal feel? Any different?

What are the sounds when you let the clutch pedal up? Is it possible to shift?

It would be great if you could give a much more complete description of the symptoms.

I was thinking the same, but surely he would note a dead pedal

There is a possibility that one of the CV joints went south (hopefully) as this would be a lot easier (and cheaper) to replace than a broken clutch/transmission.

No dead pedal.
Symptoms. Loud bang, could not put the car in gear, clutch pedal feels normal. Turned the car off tried to engage the transmission and then start the car but nothing just an engine that would start and rev up.

Ah, I think I know what it is!

One of your mounts broke. Check the engine mount and the two transmission mounts. I bet one of them is busted!

+1. Have a look under your car. Just about certain you will find one end of a CV joint disconnected. Most likely where it attaches to the transaxle.

Unfortunately this can also result in a broken transmission mount.
