My horn honks, when I hit the brakes!
This is sort of an odd question but the members of this forum have always come through when I've had odd questions.
I haven't driven my Boxster in about 6 months. Was out of the country. Now I'm back. The car drives just fine, no problems other than when I hit the brakes, the horn honks! I'm pretty sure that the inside of the steering wheel airbag is hitting the horn, something maybe loose. Anything I can do in the garage or is this a major fix?
Thanks,
John

Do a forum thread search as this has been covered a bunch of times.
To stop it temporarily, you can jam something between the airbag and the wheel in four spots on all sides and it will stop the honking while braking, but it will also disable your horn if you need it.
It's the rubber bushings in the horn pad that have worn out due to age. Normal old boxster problem.
Order the horn pad (just the rubber bushings are not available separately, of course!) from Sunset and put it in yourself to save a pile of money from the stealership.
Or, take it apart and see if you can retrofit it with a piece of garden hose as I saw done online somewhere a while back.
Or, use this opportunity to upgrade to a 3 spoke wheel... they don't have this problem!

Yep, common problem. A quick search of the forum reveals a recent thread in the General Discussions forum about it here: http://www.986forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6094 with in that thread are links to a DIY fix.

Hi,
It's just your Car's way of telling you to stay Off the Brakes...

Horn honks when you hit the breaks
Hi,
I own a 99 Porsche Boxster and I'm having the same problem. Whenever I break, my horn tends to honk on it's own. And YES, it's very embarrassing! Anyways .. did you ever get that fixed? And if so, where would I order the horn pad to fix it? Thanks.

Anthony,
Welcome to the forum!
Did you check out the previously posted links above? It's all in there.
Here they are again:
http://www.986forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6094
http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=1728 You can order the frame from the dealer, maybe even some place like Pelican parts, or follow the DIY procedures outlined in the threads above.

Hi,
This issue seems to affect only the 4-spoke steering wheel. Swap it for a 3-spoke sport wheel and problem is eliminated for good...
