Any ideas what this is?

Hi people,

after removing the complete body kit for painting (hooray at last) i found this just hanging loose behind the front bumper!!
Anyone have any idea what it is? and where it is supposed to fit? It is wired into the loom and appears to belong somewhere near the headlight on the passenger side (right hand drive car, UK) i cannot see anywhere obvious for it to go, but as you can see in the pic it has a rubber grommet as though it is supposed to pass through the body work somewhere. all theories appreciated.

From what I think I understand, that is the outside temperature gauge.

I believe that what you have is the outside air temperature sensor (sends temp info to the air conditioning system, etc). The rubber grommet is meant to pass through a hole in the radiator ducting behind either the right or left side bumper air inlet. It's on the passenger side on U.S. cars, not sure about UK.
