Transmission Compatibility

I've got a Boxster project car w/o engine or trans, and am looking at what manual transmissions might be a good swap in the car. The engine going in isn't quite decided yet, but the letter V and the number 8 are in play.
The boxster trans is too expensive for my under $5k project.
I don't mind fabricating, but why make it harder.
The engine will have 250-350 hp, so it can't be something whimpy.

A 944 trans are fairly easy to find, and appears to have the same 6-bolt attachment for the axles shafts, that looks like a plus if it does.

I may have to go with a transverse setup, so any suggestions there would be good.

thanks,
jack
