Window seam repair.
About an 8" section of the seam on my rear window has pulled out.
Looks like I would be able to just re-sew it.
Anyone with any experience on this?

I have the same problem - the stitching has come apart on both sides of the window where the plastic window folds (about 6"-8" on each side). The window is still in very good condition with no cracks or yellowing.
I don't know anything about stitching and working on a convertible top is a thankless job (been there, done that, and swore to never do it again). My solution is to have the entire plastic window replaced at a local upholstry shop on Tuesday. Cost = $400.

Four bills for that? If they are not removing it from the frame for replacement that seems pricey, it's close to the cost of a glass window top. I can't express this enough if they are repairing it on the car call a Marine canvass maker first, I would not be surprised if the cost was half.

The quotes around here for a new plastic window in mine is about $800, or $1500 for new top.

Market pricing. $400 to replace the plastic rear window is still $600 less than a new top ($600 + $400 installation). Choose your poison.
As for a marine canvass maker, those seem hard to find in my part of LA.

$500 to replace my plastic window two years ago by a shop in Mountain View California. The top was taken off the car, a new window stitched in using a sewing machine, and the top put back on.

I sewed in my plastic window by hand. Lots of cursing and frustration, and loose in some parts. I'd implore you to buy a new top or get the window sewn in by machine.

Kenny that must have sucked, especially since you would have to repair it under tension I would imagine to have it work right at all. Maybe I'm getting to be a cheap A in my older years but I had an entire canvass and screen doorway custom made for my Searay including installation and it was a little over two bills. Sure it was a long while ago but in my experience the boat canvass shops have to tackle such difficult large jobs that a glass (they call plastic glass) job for a car top is like a ground ball to them. I'm sure you could save by removing the top and bringing it to them loose but that's a sure way to invent some more new words unless Mr. Schoir (spelling?) from Long Island is in your install team, the guy is a 986 top guru.

Haha yes. I think I'll just chuck the old top out and get a whole brand new one. The old top is worn and scuffed in some places, and I've just now said to hell with it.

Haven't a clue what you are talking about. This is a link to a post from a forum member that resewed his rear window with new plastic. Thought you might get some insight into what was involved.
