this is supposed to work with some sort of gears instead of paddles
Sounds like a Torsen or Torque-biasing Diff.
I've got the Guard Torque-biasing diff in my car and it made a significant difference for autocrossing. Be warned, installing a diff is not a shade-tree DIY. The stock axle flanges must be cut and machined to fit the new diff. The diff alone was about $1500; total cost to rebuild my transaxle including new synchros and the 2nd gear pop-out fix was $4500. Removing the trans and reinstalling it isn't too hard, so that can be DIY.
