May have put too much in the trunk pressing upwards on the lid and thus more friction for the motor to overcome.

I know you don't have a dead battery but some of the techniques including fishing for the mechanical hood release cable would be the same. The hood release motor will be a bit stronger if the engine is running at 3500 RPM. But try the press gently on the front edge of the hood while you see if the motor would work.
