Tightening the top question
OK. I have the instructions on how to do it, but I can't figure out where this "bolt" is that you have to tighten. Anyone have a picture of that? It would be greatly appreciated.
"In the rear left and right side there are two cables, one each side. Follow the cable down to a ball socket and you will see a 100mm bolt. By turning the bolt counter clockwise it will tighten Do not do too much because this affects where the top meets the windshield. Usually a half to one full turn on each will do the job."
Also, in what position should the top be when I look for the bolt and do the tightening?
Thanks in advance!

Nope, that did not work.
No go here with your image. Can you email it to me perhaps? Kind of strange that the images can only be used with those few sites.....what's up with that?

Thanks so much!
P.S. I was thinking you would be the person to reply to my post and I was right on the money. I am also going to go to the site hosting your shot and see if I can get it that way.

Wish I could see it. The link above doesn't seem to work.
Was this for a soft top or hard top (that you wanted to tighten)?
I have a hard top that's rattling a lot and I'm not sure if it needs tightening or if that's just how it is.

This will be my second and last time attempt at the same picture.
Has nothing to do with a hardtop. Make sure the plastic caps are on the 2 things that go into the windshield header. There is also and adjustment on the back of the hardtop. I cannot see or hear your top on the internet so I have no way of knowing what the issue is. Jeff

This is one of the two plastic caps on the hardtop. See if your caps are in place as they like to come off. Jeff

Thanks a bunch! But I'm disoriented since I'm still not that familiar with the car yet. Where is this shot looking? Is this toward the rear of the car, the side near the seats, or up front near the visors?
Thanks again!

The picture is of the hardtop. My finger is pointing to the thing that goes into the windshield header near the visor.
Come to San Jose next time we work on cars. We made a DVD that shows how to install and adjust a hardtop. Jeff

I wish I could just get the DVD with the hard top info. Even if it's just that particular excerpt burned onto a blank DVD.

top
Weird, mine just doesn't look like that. I don't see any caps at all and mine just seems to slide in there. I don't see that look anywhere???
I have noticed that all my noise is coming from the rear. I have tried tightening the red latches and those bolts behind the panel. But still, when I manually lift the hard top a little in the rear, it lifts a decent amount. So that's what seems to be going on, it's bouncing around. It's totally driving me nuts.

Is you hardtop a factory option or was it added after. It is option code 550 on you sticker. What you call "the red latches" are the lever locks. If you cannot tighten the top down then you are doing something wrong or they are way out of adjustment. I cannot fix your top over the internet. Have someone who knows what they are doing take a look at it. You should not be able to move the top. We explain how to do this on the DVD. Jeff

I believe it was added after. I just got the car from another owner.
I will take it into the dealership here (Niello in Sacramento). Thanks for the advice.

DVDs Ordering
I tried a google search for "Tool Pants" and "DVD", which came up with this page for DVD ordering. According to the page, it is $39.95 per DVD, $99.95 for the set.

A local 996 owner sometimes comes over when we work on cars. I forgot he did toolpants.com a year or so ago.
If your car is out of warranty and/or it did not come with top when it is built then the dealer will charge. Can't tell what the problem is but the DVD might help.
As for the trip computer, I have done over 30 of them. We filmed 3 installs, with the switch and with the stalk. Jeff

Front latch cover
Anyone know if you can purchase a replacement front latch cover? It's the longer strip thing that fits over the front latch in the front center of the hard top (between the visors above the overhead light).
