Thump When Changing Gears

I got an 04 Boxster about a week ago and recently noticed that I am getting a thumping/thuding sound when switching gears at low speeds. I noticed this for the first time on Friday which as the frst time it had rained since I have had it. It was also the first time that I had it in traffic so I do not know if the rain is playing a part in it or now. Does anyone know what this might be? Should I be worried?

Sounds like a front motor mount to me. Mine did the same thing at 98K.
Try accelerating and deaccelerating quickly in first gear an couple of times. If you hear the clunking thud noise from behind you, then have the front motor mount examined.

I agree with Paul. Also, have someone drive behind you. Ask them, when you accelerate up or down, it the exhaust tip moves up and down too.

Would that even happen at slow speeds? How serious of a problem is it?

Engine mount.
If its more than 30K miles old, is going to be bad..

The bump you refer to is the typical symptom.

What do you guys recommend as far as a replacement mount? Factory? Aftermarket?

I don't know about cpsp1976, but I don't want more vibration with a track-designed one.

I’ve been experiencing similar problems. Lower speeds when I engage the clutch I sometimes get a clunk/thump. Also once in a while it gets difficult to switch gears smoothly. All symptoms of a bad motor mount. I’m bringing in my car to my Porsche mechanic and I’ll just get him to inspect that. Hopefully that’s the case not transmission related. Main reason for my appointment is because the car is starting to act sluggish upon acc.

The stock Cayman mount is a good replacement..
BUT I have been working on a performance unit with a couple of different densities used for dampening.. It's solid urethane and won't ever fail again :-)
