Depends on what the logic is....

If the problem Porsche had was that 1.2Gs would rip the suspension mounts out of the car, and 17" wheels can't develop that king of lateral grip, then the Porsche "logic" might hold.

If you put 18" on a 97 don't expect Porsche to pay for any suspension damage - then again on a '97 they wouldn't be likely to pay anyway.

... so that's partly why it's controversial.
