Question about handbrake

After watching Car and Driver today as always, I have always noticed they spin the tires on almost every sedan/coupe. Some of the cars cound never spin the tires just by going to the floor from a standstill. Do they use the handbrake? If so how does that work? Which set or tires does it lock up? If it locks the driven wheels woundnt that destroy the brakes? Thanks.

The emergency brake locks/ brakes the rear tires. [the rear hat of the rotor. contains pads, the hat is the drum.]

An application of either ammonia [billowing smoke] or water will help let your tires spin.

Current era transmissions and LSD's try to prevent you from doing this to your car. [It's a waste of power]

It is very hard on your tranny and brakes, along with a million other things.

If this is cool get a 70's muscle car and burn them off all day. They were known for it.
