Air/Oil separator...progressive?

Is the failure of the A/O separator a progressive condition? I know the occasional smoke on start-up is normal but I am seeing the frequency of the smoke emissions increase, both in frequency and intensity. I have just short of 23,000 miles on this '97 and want to be prepared for a solution if needed.

The standard progression is:

I. Some smoke
II. More smoke
III. CEL
IV. 1974 Buick impersonation

In many cases, the AOS can simply fail and go straight to Stage IV.

I am in currently in stage III and have a new AOS on the way.
