What to Do???

Hey, im new here but, ive just bought a 2001 Boxster with 57k miles. Its in REALLY nice shape (ill post some pics tomorrow after i wax it) but my dad has a 1998 Boxster thats fairly beat up and not really to great (both are 5 spd man) and it goes like a rocket compared to mine? I am not sure of any upgrades to either car the exhaust's look stock but im thinking the 98 has a new intake because it sounds WAY better than my 2001, it also seems to shift WAY faster, i skip from 1-3-5 on his and can barely catch them in mine the rpm's fall slow. Im looking to get some more performance out of mine what should i do thats cheap? Thanks!!!!

Your fathers car is a cable throttle, yours - E-gas, I have not driven an e-gas equiped car but I imagine it is not as crisp as a cable throttle car.
The gear ratios on your fathers car are different than yours, 2.5L vs 2.7L engines. The gears in his gearbox favor the 2.5 liter, and will produce different results than yours in the 2.7. His might or might not have an aftermarket intake, probably de-snorked. It sounds like you may not know the service history on your car. I would start out with an oil change, new air filter, I went with a BMC filter$100(oiled, but will last 30-50k miles, when it gets old and dirty, just replace, do not try to re-oil); De-snork, plenty of info around on this procedure. B&M short shifter, $150? Easy install and arguably the best mod for the money. After that your gonna be looking at some money for future mods, aftermarket exhaust - $600 - $1000, headers - $600 - $1000, Sport cats - $1000, ECU reprograming - $1000, suspension - $250(just springs) - $2500+(coilovers). I have a 2000 2.7 with around 80k miles. My car always seemed abnormally slow. Recently, I had it hooked up to the Porsche scanning tool, and it turns out the cam timing on both banks was retarded by 5 degrees. In addition to this, the rails in my Variocam system were in terrible shape. My Porsche specialist said that early 996's and some Boxsters have problems with the timing chain stretching slightly and the cam gears also falling out of adjustment or never being properly adjusted in the first place from the factory. These problems, if they happen, usually start to occur around 50-60k miles.

My car is being repaired right now, and I look forward to the restored performance. You may want to take your car to a dealer or specialist with the original Porsche scanning tool and have them check for this as well.

alright so I desnorkeled it today took me about 5 minutes, and it sounds alot better. also im changing oil tomorrow w/ M1 synthetic, what is a good viscosity to use for 80-100 degrees F and 57k miles??? I am now thinking of doing something with the exhaust, like the cat delete, any suggestions for the exhaust? thanks!!
