Check Engine Light indicates Hydraulic Cam Adjuster Solenoid Failure

I have a 1997 Boxster with low miles. The dealer tells me that the check engine light indicates that the Solenoid for the Hydraulic Cam Timing adjuster is faulty and that the engine needs to come out to fix it.

Has anyone had a similar problem? Is their a cheaper solution?

Where can I get a code reader so I can check and reset the codes myself?

You can get the codes read for free at Autozone.

Maybe then you will be sure.
