Split wheels

hi
I have just got my 2000 Boxster S, lovely car, it needs some simple things doing . one is wheel referb

I have 18" split rims, I have taken them to a specialist to get a price on referb and he has advised against splitting the rims as the bolts may break. he is recommending powder coating the wheel over the split rim bolts, which clearly would look naff

Question is, is this a genuine concern of bolts breaking? I do have some history with the car , but nothing on wheel repairs

thanks in advance
