Back to Basics

I'm a long time Porsche owner. I've been at this since 1969 having owned 356 Speedsters (when they were disposable $1,000 cars) to a new 2013 Boxster S PDK. Over the years I've owned over 25 Porsches, 356's, 912's, 911's, 914/914-6's, 944's, 928, and two 986's and a 981S. I bought my 981S new for a cost of $83,600, drove it 5 years and with only 10,200 on the odo wanted to sell it but could only get offers of $43,000! I ended up trading it for a VERY rare 1965 912 "painted dash" in ultra rare Togo brown (this will assure that my investment lost on the 981 will be protected as the 912 will soon reach the initial cost of the 981!). Obviously we don't buy Porsches as an investment but for fun! Still I own a 1958 356A Super Coupe, a replica 1959 356A Carrera Speedster, the '65 912 and now a 1997 Boxster that I recently bought for $4,500 in excellent condition with many unique options with 123,000 on the odo. Given my extensive background, I'd say my recent buy confirms what most of you know, that the 986's are AWESOME Porsches! For the money they FAR exceed any other Porsche for the money! While the 981 was an amazing car it seemed big compared to the 986, it had 0 owner participation and it's resale was to say the least dismal! My prior 986 was a car I worked on and enjoyed, the 981 you got in drove it and that was that! Many of us who grew up with Porsches in our lives learned part of the fun was being able to work on your Porsche, succeed or fail at that, and learned to appreciate the car for a lot more than the fun you had driving it! I'm ecstatic at the ownership of my new /old '97! It's like returning to something you long ago cherished but lost and finding it again and enjoying it MORE!

Many of us may not have had that kind of Porche experience. It's nice to know that, we are fortunate to own one of the best Porches an owner can be proud of. Ironic that owning one of the best Porches (986) for the money is also a model that saved the company (Porche) from financial dire straits.

Thanks! I'll try and get some decent photos of them. Car came with the factory wood steering wheel with aluminum rivets and leather grips, white gauges, Aluminum gear shift knob, parking brake handle and threshold covers, larger stainless steel tail pipe, 17" wheels, leather interior and CD player and changer, on board computer, metallic black paint.
